Frequently Asked Questions about Reiki
What is Reiki?
“Reiki” (pronounced RAY-key), from the Japanese words rei (霊), meaning “universal” or “spirit,” and ki (気), meaning “life force” or “energy”, is a Japanese energy healing method that promotes relaxation, eases discomfort and pain, and supports the body’s natural ability to heal itself.
A Reiki practitioner serves as a conduit for this energy after being properly attuned by a Reiki Master and offers healing through gentle touch or by placing the hands just above the body. During a session, a calm, soothing flow of energy is channeled through the practitioner to the recipient, helping to release tension, quiet the mind, and restore balance. This universal life energy does not come from the practitioner—it is the same subtle, vital force that flows through and around all living beings.
Reiki is not a religion; it is a universal practice accessible to everyone, regardless of faith or belief. 🌎
How does Reiki work?
Reiki works through the body’s own energy field, which flows within and around all of us. When this flow becomes blocked - due to stress, injury, or emotional strain - it can lead to imbalance or discomfort. Reiki helps clear and realign these energetic pathways, allowing life force energy to move freely once again. This supports harmony within the body, mind, and spirit, encouraging overall wellness.
Like any healing practice, the greatest benefits are often experienced through regular sessions over time, as Reiki gently supports ongoing balance and renewal.
How will I know Reiki works for me?
Each person’s experience with Reiki is unique. Many people notice warmth, tingling, or waves of calm energy during a session, followed by a deep sense of peace or mental clarity afterward. Others may feel subtle shifts in mood, sleep, or stress levels over the following days.
While scientific studies continue to explore Reiki’s mechanisms, much of its evidence remains experiential. You can learn more about current research at the Center for Reiki Research. The best way to understand Reiki’s benefits is simply to experience it for yourself.
What are the benefits of Reiki?
People often report a variety of benefits after Reiki sessions, including:
-
Deep relaxation and stress relief
-
Better sleep and reduced anxiety
-
Relief from physical tension or discomfort
-
Greater emotional balance and mental clarity
-
A peaceful sense of harmony and well-being
Can Reiki cause any harm?
Reiki is a gentle, non-invasive practice with no known risks or contraindications. It naturally adjusts to each person’s needs and works safely alongside other healing modalities. Reiki is never forceful, it flows only where it is needed and always with the energetic consent of the recipient. Whether you come to Reiki with an open heart or a curious mind, its calming energy can still bring comfort and support.
Where did Reiki originate?
Reiki originated in Japan in the early 1900s with Mikao Usui (1865–1926), who developed this method as a way to promote physical, emotional, and spiritual healing. Usui founded a healing clinic in Tokyo and taught Reiki throughout Japan until his passing.
In the 1930s, Hawayo Takata, a Japanese-American woman, received Reiki treatments from one of Usui’s students, Dr. Chujiro Hayashi, and later studied under him. She brought Reiki to Hawaii, and by the 1970s, began teaching it throughout the United States.
Before her passing in 1980, Mrs. Takata trained 22 Reiki Masters who continued sharing the practice worldwide. Today, Reiki is practiced across the globe (in almost every country) in homes, clinics, and hospitals, offering comfort and support to people and animals alike.
